Workflow is not new January 19, 2006

I watched a video earlier on some of the new workflow features in SharePoint, and the statement was made in the video that workflow is new. Newsflash: workflow is not new. Just because we now have the technologies to manage workflow, it is not a new thing.
These technologies will help to create a more transparent, santized version of workflow free from all of the politics, turf control, and roadblocking caused by labor. Now instead of having $20,000 a year clerks creating bottlenecks in our processes, we’ll be hostage to $65k analysts trying to puzzle out the complexities of workflow technology.
Do you have any ideas on a better way this could be managed? Or a better alternative?
How about a set of tools that the users themselves could pick up and incorporate into their workflows as and how they saw fit?
